Hoping someone can answer this. We got loads of cheques as wedding presents. Most were made out to my maiden name or husband's but we have 2 that are in joint names (using my married name). We don't have a joint account and I haven't changed my name at the bank yet. Will we have to open a joint account to pay these in or will the bank let husband put them in his account?

What's the problem?
Just pay in anything in your maiden name, change your bank account to your married name, and pay in the cheques in the married name. Simples.
Or, if you want to make it harder for yourselves, open a new building society or bank in joint (married) names using your marriage certificate as proof of your change of name. Not hard, either.0 -
I know it's not hard. I'm just incredibly lazy and looking for the path of least resistance.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0

Well then, change your joint bank account to your correct name, having made sure you've paid in any cheques in your old name first.0

Isn't the question to do with the fact the cheques are in joint names but the bank account isn't? Can it be paid into an account owned by just of the names on the cheque? I assumed that's what OP meant and as I'm not planning on setting up a joint account if anyone gives me and OH cheques in joint names I'd be stuck too0

I've not worked in a bank for a few years but if you contact your local branch they should be able to come up with a few suggestions..
Do you plan to open a joint account....if so do it and pay the cheques in...if not advise the bank you want to open one and use it for the purpose of cashing the joint cheques only...
Do you plan to change your account to your married name...its an easy process and just requires the bank to have a copy of the marrige certificate which they will return to you after verification...
I seem to remember that it may be possible to pay the cheques into one of the named persons account...probably best to be your husbands as thats the family name now ....if you sign the cheques on the back...I think you may need to change your name on your sole account and then sign in your married name on the reverse of the cheque if that makes sense...but what you are effectively saying is that by signing the reverse of the cheque you are happy for it to be cashed through someone elses bank account...
Your other option is to contact your guests and ask them to re issue the cheque in one or the other name...
Please contact your bank or pop in I'm sure they wwill be able yo suggest something...its not an uncommon occurance so there will be a simple solution
The reason the cheques cant be paid striaght into any account is the fact that they will have two lines running through the middle saying "account payee" meaning that they are crossed and can only be paid into an account of that name...its done in an effort to prevent fraud but unfortunately it will have an impact on perfectly legitimate cases like yours too...

Fairly sure you can bank them in your husband's account, but you may both need to be there to countersign.

Hi
When I worked in the building society, if it was a joint cheque, then it had to go into a joint account.
Don't know if this has changed in the last 5 years since I left or not.
