You don’t want to shoot them with an air rifle but you would be happy to castrate the little cuties or set the neighbours cats on them.:Daderbyshirelad wrote:I'd certainly like to remove their nuts now!!! ..0 -

Hello aderbyshirelad
I'll move your thread to the 'Greenfingered' board.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

I had this problem and the only way I could get any daffs at all was to plant them in pots, then put a piece of glass over the top of the pot (held in place with a brick), that way they still get light and the glass acts as a kind of self watering system.
You have to remember to remove the glass of course early spring when the shoots start to come through. Don't know why, but the little devils don't try to dig them up once the daffs have sprouted.A friend is someone who overlooks your broken fence and admires the flowers in your garden.0 -
Maybe you could try giving them some nuts?
Guess it might encourage them though.0 -
Not ha dthis problem myself but wondered if noise would act as a deterent. Could you hang some windchimes nearby. Just an idea!!

Hi I feed them ..they have their own peanut feeder, and plant all my bulbs in chicken wire cages.
These can then be moved around the borders if needed. I also put the chicken wire cages in pots with an extra bit of wire over the top.
So far this has worked for the last 18months.:j0 -
Great ideas guys, thanks for all the help. I like the idea of the chicken wire cages annie123 - I might suggest them to a friend of mine in the sticks who always has a problem with badgers eating her tulips - not sure chicken wire would stand up to them though!0

I guess I'm a softy. I used to live in a house with a badger sett in the next field. They used to like old veg and cheap dog food.0 -
Before planting the bulbs, soak them for about 20 minutes in tonic water. Make sure it has quinine in it, as it's this that the squirrels apparantly can't stand.
Not tried this yet, it came from BBC's Gardener's World last week.0
