Hi Guys
Struggling with this one I have to admit
My brothers PC, windows XP... he turned it off as normal went to turn back on and the keyboard and mouse had stopped working
He thought it was just the mouse so replaced it, but clearly made no difference.
The mouse and keyboard function fine, and I can get into the CMOS settings, I can load safe mode but again the mouse/kboard dont function so I can even access cpanel or anything.
Ive tried to boot Windows recovery through CD but after loading it goes onto a blue error screen and forces me to restart!
Not having much luck
Thanks
Mark

Hi
The keyboard is wirless (receiver plugged into USB) and the mouse is also USB, I beleive the older mouse which he replaced was PS20 -
Make sure the devices are plugged into rear USB ports rather than front and if that doesn't work...
...try plugging the KB receiver and USB mouse into separate USB buses. i.e.
[ Mouse] [ - - - - ]
[ - - - - ] [ - K B - ]
Keep them diagonal rather than side-by-side or above and below. This might seem really strange and I'm sure someone is already thinking I'm a bit of a kook but I've seen this work on dozens of computers using Intel motherboards, primary culprit being Viglen Genie. Allow at least 10 minutes in Windows for drivers to install.0 -
Random words that i can remember when i had the similar problem, someone will be able to explain, i hope.
Did a sp2 to sp3 update, usb all working.
Days later, plugged in usb mem stick.
mem stick not recognised, was looking for usbstor.sys and i think 2/3 others. Told xp to go find it online or offline, said it found it but could not copy it to a /system folder.
thought ok, unpluged usb mem stick, copied the mem stick files to cd on another pc, thought no more of it, as i'd done what i wanted.
Next reboot was when nothing usb related worked. Google search said uninstall and re-install the usb drivers one by one in device manager. did that, not working.
Came across something about 1.1 and 2.0 and motherboards and xp3 having and older version of usbstor than xp2.
Remebered that my external hard drive had usb drivers built into it and plugged that in. it copied the files it couldnt previously and everything was sorted.
Still had a few glitches here and there, so uninstalled sp3 using a system restore.0 -
Just a random thought from me here, when you get into bios (cmos) settings is the clock correct, and is the USB legacy USB support enabled...it may be a cmos battery gone flat and bios gone back to defaults....4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . First thing I would do is to use a PS2 mouse and keyboard (borrow them if you can). Plug these in and see if it fires up okay. If so, go into the BIOS and check to see if the USB settings for mouse and keyboard are enabled. If not, then enable these and press F10 to save the settings. It's also possible that the CMOS battery is on it's way out so you could replace this and re-set the system (date/time/boot order etc) - if the PC is getting old then replace the battery as a matter of priority.0

appreciate the help guys
can confirm, the date is correct and the USB legacy is enabled
Nothing I can think of works0 -
Or just sit and wait. I've had this on a number of occasions when doing office moves for the NHS; for some reason they don't always like being put in different ports and can take a while to 're-install' themselves.0

i get the same problem but my keyboard connection is PS2, and its a microsoft keyboard to boot. Everything working, runs fine after 3 or 4 shutdowns, and then the keyboard light doesnt come on, looking in device manager says its unknown device, uninstall drivers, search for new drivers, reinstalls the drivers already installed in os, and then tells me to reboot and everything works ok again. after 4 normal shutdowns, back to square one. also Win xp pro with Sp3 installed. i've even gone the root of deleting the files showing in the drivers window, and then rebooting and scanning for changes. same thing.0
