Sainsburys student gift card 'meal ticket'

My MIL has got one of these for my DS. SHe has taken the top half and put cash on it and he has the bottom half.
She thinks it needs to be registered, in case of loss, but there is no facility to do that online and it seems to infer that you don't. Needless to say their careline is closed and he is off to Uni tomorrow. Has anyone got one of these or can help at all?

In the FAQ it says the card has to be activated before use?
I did use this one for my daughter a couple of years ago and it worked great, newer had a problem with it.
My last daughter goes to uni on Saturday, busy packing as I type.
