Can I save with British Gas?
I have just joined British Gas EnergySmart for gas. They seem to have put me on a monthly fixed bill of £45. There is also an option the change to a variable monthly bill where I just pay for what I use. I don't think I use that much, what is the average monthly gas bill for a 2 bed flat? Would I save by changing to a variable bill?

Have you just movedn into the flat or just had a gas installation? Your previous bill (preferably over the last 12 months) will give you some indication of what YOUR average usage is, remember between october and april you may use 75% of your annual gas consumption.0

The energysmart add on to either the standard, or online saver tarriff is not the cheapest option.
Your would be better off with Websaver 13, or another supplier.
Energysmart IMHO is only really suitable for electricity where you use roughly the same amount each month, and you may be able to save a few pence by monitoring your use with the supplied monitor. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Sorry should have clarified, I have just moved in so not sure what my normal monthly usage would be. Just wondering if £45 sounds right?
Edit: To penrhyn, I didn't actually know that BG put me on EnergySmart. I just called them to tell them I live here now and they just put me on it.0 -
Ah, they probably have done this so you don't go into debit by next spring.
I'm a fairly low user, around 9000Kwh /pa in a mid terrace with reasonable insulation, am paying around £35/month.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
BG for gas only are one of the dearest gas providers. I appreciate you have just moved in, but as one of the other posters stated earlier, between october and march the majority of households use 70-85% of all gas they consume in a year, so £45 is low, I know no-one wants to feel they are paying too much, but my advice if you stay with BG for gs, do the monthly variable and be religious about submitting reads monthly to ensure no estimates, otherwise, hit the comparison sites, use the "I don't know my consumption" section and will ask some questions to do an estimate and then the comp site will give allresults cheapest to dearerst.0

There is also an Online saver tariff that will give you a discount and let you use the energy smart,Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

Although it is possible to save money, it is a vary rare occasion indeed where BG are the best price in the market; I doubt that less than 99% of people could not improve by going elsewhere.0
