I have to say I have a ground source heat pump installed to heat a warehouse and the saving hasn’t been anywhere near expected. Granted it was installed a few years ago.

There were a lot of very bad installations, especially with ground source and installation into places that are not really suitable. Bad design, poor preparation, equipment that simply did not deliver has unfortunately given much of this technology a bad name. With ground source you are trying to take heat out of the ground, but many clays and soils are poor conductors. I have heard many sorry tales of bad installations.

You also need a much larger area to radiate the heat from as the heating system works at a lower temperature than conventional. They are ideal for underfloor.

Technology is now moving ahead apace, Hatachi's new ones work at -20C. If anyone is buying one I can't overstate the importance of doing your homework, there is a big variation in performance, cheapest is not always best and you need people who know what they are doing when installing.

I see we're not missing out on so many thousands here in NI now. The subsidies for solar panels have been slashed by 50% across the water. We aren’t looking so “hard done by” now.

Indeed and about time too IMO. I wonder if it is a sign of how they think energy prices are going to head in the years ahead. They will be so high they won't need inducements?
