I think it may be down to the larger number of Energy companies in GB who have to have a certain amount of "green" energy making up their overall supply.

I think it is also political and has to do with incentives. There are grants which are funnelled through NIE (or whatever they are now called).

There was a consultation document (consultation finished on 3rd of October) Hopefully it will result in a more coherent approach.

I am told that the pay back period for solar generated electricity is already less than 10 years with current incentives. Installations such as air source heat pumps to replace oil and gas boilers are also looking attractive.

The problem with most of it is that it makes sense to invest, but most people simply do not have the initial money. Certainly it would be a better place to invest than a savings account in some bank.

  • I must say, I'm tempted... about £7k for a 2.25kw system with a 7 year payback.... :money:

So am I. I am thinking of installing air source heat pumps and solar panels (or a small wind turbine) in the office and at home in the new year if I can get the finance in place. If the return is say 10% it is an easy decision and if the price of fuel continues to increase the pay back period will shorten.

  • Here is the clincher - its what makes it not only a green money saver but a real moneyspinner everywhere else in the UK : the Feed In Tariff (FIT) at 43p/KWh.

This is paid by the electricity company as part of its obligation to use renewable sources. This is paid all over Europe - but not NI.

Now, if we already pay the dearest electricity in UK (possibly Europe) WITHOUT the FIT, how much worse off are we than everywhere else?

The money from a potential feedin tariff here in NI would have to be paid from existing assembly funds. That’s a lot of money to come off health, roads etc. There’s also renewed talk in England to scrap the tariff or reduce it substantially. It’s also inflation linked if I’m not mistaken.

He has probably sat down and worked them out. Cost of unit of electricity, cost of installation etc. A lot depends on site and actual installation costs. Generally returns of over 10% but do your own calcs and take a bit off, nothing is ever as good as the literature claims.

Technologies like Air source heat pumps really do make sense especially if you can adopt your existing heating system easily. As I said earlier I am seriously considering installing at home and in the office along with some solarPv and in both places I have very efficient condensing boilers! If I had the money to do it today I would. I must emphasise that I do not sell these pieces of equipment and I do believe that the costs of the equipment will fall in the next few years.

It is one well worth keeping an eye on, and if you are replacing an old boiler consider spending more if you can. The opportunity to reduce the running costs of your heating and hot water by 75% is worth at least considering.

I have to say I have a ground source heat pump installed to heat a warehouse and the saving hasn’t been anywhere near expected. Granted it was installed a few years ago.
