Hi. Really you will have to go and ask why he has not had benefit. It could be a mistake, or it could be a poorly worded computer letter that makes you assume he is entitled to benefit.

If you are a full time student, you are excluded from any possible loan from DWP. You have to apply to your college hardship fund for money instead. If you have a bursary/loan income then Jobseeker's Allowance take this into account.

Whilst a couple do get £105 to live on - the benefit section will deduct a weekly average of your income albeit loans,

I cant answer your question about Vodaphone. But to call Crisis Loans from most networks is free. To call a Jobcentre is chargeable. To call the Jobseeker's Allowance Helpline is chargable.

Not sure if that answers everything you asked but let me know and good luck! :)

    Thanks very much to all.

Actually his JSA went in on Thursday night so I never had to go get a crisis loan in any case which is good as It meant I could spend the afternoon doing some surveys and the like.

We are not getting 105 we are just getting the 65pw as I am not a jobseeker as i am at uni plus I do an unpaid placement. Only for a few months more then Im looking forward to earning ( putting it mildly!)

I cant get anything from the student hardship fund as
    a) I need to have 10k in the bank to apply ( which we dont)
b)Im a part time student so am expected to work part time- I do but its unpaid etc.

We are having a struggle with tax credits as its not 100% clear how much he earned last year to the penny and they wont give us a claim pack until we do know. I shall get him to try again to work this out. Id have thought they would know, being the inland revenue and all, they have bee taking emergency tax off him for the last temp job he did.

    Ho hum!

    Thanks all x

I have never been a university student yet, but I would assume if you had 10k in the bank you couldn't apply to the hardship fund??? I think you have misread that somewhere. Hardship means you have no money, not you need to have 10k in the bank to claim it

Hi, no I didnt read it, a student advisor in my uni told me this when I called them about it.

They say this is because student hardship money cannot be seen as "income" or "what you need to live on" you need to have that sorted yourself. However, if there are costs you cannot cover, then you can apply to hardship.

As I said I dont have 10k where is there I can apply to, he said, nothing that I know of.

They said I should get a CDL: however, I applied for a CDL and it only covers fees ( which I have mostly already paid) and not any living expenses like food, rent, electric bill etc. However he said if I was a full time student I probably would be lent the money for living. however this is a moot point as Im part time and thats the way it is!

He said I fall between the cracks and giving up my placement and finding paid work is the only advice they could offer.
