Worcester 28Si II boiler problem

Hi all,
I have a problem with my boiler and it has now stopped working totally.
Last week we had the central heating on for the first time in a few months. It was on for a couple of hours after this the boiler light (the bigger one to the right as you are facing it) started flashing constantly and the boiler stopped working.
Holding this button in for a bout 5 seconds reset it and it started working again and we had hot water no problem.
We did not try the heating again for a few days and when we did the same fault arose.
However, this time after a reset the boiler would not work again. It would fire up for about a seond - the light indicating a flame would come on for about a second - and then it would go off and the larger light would start flashing again.
I now cannot get the boiler to work at all.
I have had a plumber round who says it might be the circuit board (although he cant be sure). A new one of these appears to be £200 plus -with no guarantee that this will fix the fault!
Worcester are willing to do a fixed repair for £292 or a fixed repair and 12 months boiler cover for £369.
This sounds a lot but might prove to be a better investment in the longer term.
The added complication is that we are in the process of starting to get a new kitchen and really only need this boiler for a few more months while the new kitchen and new boiler we want are being installed.
So ideally we only really need a quick fix on the boiler that will keep it going for a few months!
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Hi, you don't say how old your boiler is - is it definetly out of guarantee? The Worcester fixed price does seem a bit steep but at least you should get piece of mind it's from the manufacturer.
The alternative is to splash out on a new boiler if you can afford it - both Worcester and Vaillant are offering 5 year guarantees on their products till the end of the year, so if you're thinking about changing it, do it sooner rather than later. Personally I recommend and install Vaillant, though they're both good brands.0 -
Looks like the price has gone up... I don’t normally go for warranties but our 28i was soooo unreliable we paid for the fix + 12 months – they changed the pcb + service and 6 months later fixed some leaks & washers for free. I suppose the danger is they clean a sensor & it works but you have forked out nearly £400 – at least you know it’s fixed though. Sounds though if it was a simple fix your plumber should have been able to do it.
British Gas did a £99 fix anything deal a while back I had the heater matrix replaced by them (a £200 item!)0 -
we had the exact boiler and leaves were blocking the flue in the autumn.
blowing in and the odd one was lodged. The engineer showed me and I later removed leaves myself. We got far less when we put a guard cage up.
We found Worcester expensive but the boiler was very reliable0 -
we had a problem a few years ago and in the finish had to call worcester out, local gas fitters kept letting us down and it was the middle of winter, cant remember the cost now but it was very expensive. worcester told me for the fee paid they would fix any three faults on the boiler inclusive of the fee. turned out we needed an expensive part for the boiler might have been an expansion tank but as i say it was a few years ago now, the gas fitter told me we would have paid more if a local company had come out and we had to pay parts and labour.they also guaranteed the work and parts.0

Thanks for your replies.
I did bite the bullet in the end and paid £360 odd to get the fixed price repair and the boiler cover for 12 months.
The engineer turned up today and had to replace the PCB - it now works fine so will see what happens over the next few months when the boiler will get a lot of use!
Thanks again for all your help.0 -
about whether it's worth it for such a short time before your new kitchen-it does seem very expensive for such a short time.0
