Travel time between ceremony and reception

Can I ask a question about how long the journey took / is going to take between your wedding and your reception?

Or if you can remember the journey time at any weddings you've attended.

The reception I want would be in a big private house with an indoor pool and all sorts of fun stuff to do. But the perfect house I've got my eye on is around an hour's drive away from the church.

So. I am asking if this seems a ridiculously long journey time, but I also am really interested in finding out everyone else's journey times. Just to see what the norm is!

The church and reception venue for our wedding will be approximately a one-hour drive apart. Not bothered with that to be honest - gives us some time to relax in between the two :)

When we got married we ended up at a venue about 10 mins from the church...we did look at a venue that was a 45 min drive but eventually discounted it basically because it was not an easy drive ...in terms of issuing directions to guests to get to or the fact that some of the roads could have been quite busy on a Saturday afternoon.

Personally I dont think its an unreasonable journey for your guests to make ...but you do need to consider how everyone is going to get from church to venue or at least that they all arrive in time for the meal

the further you are all away from the reception venue the more time it takes everyone to gather at the venue...so you will need to factor in driving conditions and things like that.....

Ours is almost an hour as well... further than we wanted but it is a great venue!!! But we wouldn't go any further than that.

Our neighbour's wedding last year had a reception venue that was 2 hours' drive from the church!!

  • I think that an hour's easy drive (in terms of directions) is better than 15 minutes of one-way streets, city centre traffic and complicated directions!

As long as you make sure, as LEJC has said, that everyone is catered for in terms of getting there, whether that's a convoy of cars or laying on a coach, and that you allow a contingency 1/2 hour or so to allow people to take the wrong turning etc, then that is fine, IMO.

Venue was 10 minutes away from where we got married.

Weddings I've been to have all been local too.

To be honest, only if it was someone really really close to me, would I travel for an hour from ceremony to venue, as getting there isn't the problem, it's getting back home again, or having to fork out for a hotel.

Hm, sorry to be the doomsayer, but I think an hour's pushing your luck, really.

I think ours was around the furthest I've ever been to: 20-25 minutes.

I don't know how I'd feel about driving an hour...I guess I'd probably do it happy enough, but it would up the "hassle factor" significantly - and, more importantly, would add a fair amount to the fuel/expense needed to make the journey...and if it was an hour further from where I live, it might mean I'd have to set off earlier to get back, too...

To recall as many of the weddings I can remember:
    1) 5 min walk
    2) Same venue
    3) 5 minute drive
    4) same venue
    5) 10 mins drive
    5) 15 mins drive
    6) 25 mins drive (us)
    7) 20 mins drive
  • Ours is half an hour drive, but it's driving only.... Planning a convoy! :)

Yeah, that's the problem with having your reception in the middle of nowhere - it takes a while to get there ;)
