To Sell or Not to Sell Dream Car??

I currently own a Beetle and am in a dilemma about what to do. Due to changes in my job I now commute to work on the train and live 10 minutes walk from the station so no longer use the car day to day. I do however use it for a bit of driving at the weekend but can honestly say I have probably driven it two to three times in the last month. Issue is that the car is a 2.0L and uses a lot of fuel and tax etc is expensive and I don't feel I'm getting my use out of it. I suppose it's a heart over head issue as I love this car and saved up and paid cash for it (most of which was from claiming back mis-sold PPI!!) and I also don't want to lose my independence. So do I sell the car through a private sale and bank the £6,500ish or trade it in for a car with a smaller engine 1.0L or 1.2L and get £500 more (£7,000) for it and bank the excess? Or do I let my heart win and keep it, knowing that it needs a service and some work i.e. new tyres??
I appreciate that this is more of an emotional issue for you Money Savers but would appreciate some clarity on the issue from an outsider!!

Well first of all, they're ten-a-penny so if you do sell it you could always buy another one sometime.
Surely if you now don't have to drive as much then the petrol consumption isn't a concern...?
And how do you figure that by trading it in you'll get more for it? Thats not right..
Personally, it's about what you can afford to do, and wether or not you are prepared to pay for the luxury.
It's your choice, nobody here can make that choice for you (no matter what they might say)0 -

Is this a new beetle or an old one???
If a renovated early model think twice, they do have good value, and some sentimental value, I had several.
If it's a mk2 then forget it, it was just an ugly version of the golf which in itself wasn't a great car, just a money spinner for audivdub.
Almost any other car will save you money re running costs for the same space and performance.:AI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

you might get £500 more on a trade in but it's not because they're very nice men. It's because they're pulling your pants down on the car they're selling you.0 -
If your not driving it much why is fuel costs a big issue?
Just stick with it and enjoy.0 -

With a 2 litre engine I'm pretty sure it will be a mk2, and I agree, get rid of it - scrapping it to save the world from having to look at it would be good, but probably not very money-saving.

Yup, there's a well worn answer here that the cheapest car to run is the one you have now;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

But it's true chaning cars especially using part exchange is likley to COST you money, even if you go for a supposedly cheaper car. If you get a much cheaper car you may get a few quid back but the deal will be awful.0
