Portable mp3 speakers for use in a large room?

Hello
I'm hoping someone in here might have some experience of using portable mp3 player speakers.
I'm a yoga teacher and often use music in my classes. My old portable cd player/ ghettoblaster thing has kicked the bucket and I'm wondering whether to replace it with an mp3 player and some portable speakers. This would be more expensive than buying a new cd player, but would give me more control over the playlist rather than flapping about with cds, so that would be great. However I sometimes teach in quite large rooms (such as church halls), and I'm not sure whether the portable speakers available for mp3 players would be loud enough - we don't have the music on particularly loud but I'd like people at the back to be able to hear!
Any ideas/experiences/recommendations would be great, I don't want to invest lots of money in this and find no one can hear!
Thanks, Sarri
