BT Homehub V3 shorting (or something else) the line

I've got a homehub V2 and decided to replace with the V3 that a friend gave me (as he's moving out). After adding it the line went (no dial tone) I have internet but its not a good connection. This happened once (had the line looked into and fixed) before and I considered it coincidence but it happened again.

Qn would this make me responsible for an engineer fee? Its BT's equipment (but getting it from my friend clouds it). Anyone else have this problem? Should i keep quiet or mention it? Last time they changed some wires at the green box and it fixed it.
