If you want to fly on Friday 13th, you'll need to leave the UK on the 12th and arrive on the 14th. Or leave Australia on the 12th at night and extend your unlucky day to 34 hours.

If you really can't afford it then Air Asia is obviously your choice, however, if you fly away from peak times i.e. summers (July-Sep, Nov-Jan) then on specific dates there are excellent fares in Premium Economy on BA and Qantas, less than £1500 at the moment. When economy on the same plane is upwards of £1000 it's quite worth it.

Alternatively, for a London-Australia trip, take a Star Alliance airline and join Aegean Airlines Miles & Bonus, and you instantly earn a Star Alliance Gold card which gives you worldwide lounge access plus other priority benefits on any Star Alliance airline for the next 3 years.
