Just make sure you don't copy text from other sites, this is a big no no. Always write your own content even if your just rewrite something you've read in a differant way.

SEO is a huge field and it's changing quickly but here's some suggestions...

Get Google Analytics on your website to track visitors/pageviews/bounces etc
Get a Google Webmaster tools account and link it up to the website

Also try registering your website at dmoz.org as most of the search engines use it.
