For some reason on my XP PC the folders containing photos or videos no longer display thumbnails of the files even though that is the display type I have selected. Can anyone think what may have happened?

Are you sure that you have selected the thumbnail option in 'view' on the menu bar? This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0

I need to be more specific. In fact all photos are ok. It is the Divx films that are suffixed .avi that no longer show the first frame - they used to though.0

Sounds like the shmedia.dll has somehow become un-registered. It handles previewing of video thumbnails in folders.
The following will re-register the .dll, but be warned - there is a known issue that causes explorer to sometimes crash when attempting to display DivX or XviD thumbnails - so it may be disabled for a reason, depending what codecs you installed.
Start > Run
To enable it type regsvr32 shmedia.dll
If you have the problem with explorer crashing, simply disable the dll again.
To disable the .dll type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
If this is the case, then getting it to work properly can be a major pain, there's no easy workaround (that I've found) and you may have to live with the problem. Other suggestions would be to try uninstalling any codecs and/or codec packs you have and look into ffdshow (not guaranteed to solve the problem!)This is not a signature...0
