Kitchen plasterboard

Having ripped walls and ceiling down in our kitchen, I am ordering the new plasterboard to replace. the building inspector who came to check the steel beam said he wanted to come back when the ceiling was back up to check for fire safety. Do you need to use a special type of plasterboard for kitchens - extra fire resistant one? (yes I would have asked him what he would be checking if I was here at the time but wasnt unfortunately)

thanks

You don't need a special type of board for kitchens. He may be inferring that you need to double board the steel which will give a 30 min protection.

    Probably worth checking with him.

Is it a flat? Not sure of the exact regs but if it is then I think you must use fireboard (its the pink stuff).

You could use fireboard anyway as it will provide some fire protection. We've just done our kitchen ceiling with it - its fine to put up but very heavy so don't get any bigger than 6 x 3 foot boards!
  • Thanks Phill99, it does say on our structural surveyor drawing 30 min fire protection so that would make sense. If that's the case, will they be happy just to look at that bit (around the beam) or do you think they are likely to want to see whole ceiling done? I will check but just wanted an opinion as dont really want to do ceiling just yet, but do want building control signed off and out the way.

    Thanks

  • Hi BlueC No it's not a flat. It is a house with a single storey extension on the side and we have opened up the arch ways between house and extension- hence the steels to hold rest of house up :D
