Registering as Self employed

My beloved missus started work as a Childminders assistant two weeks ago. She is self employed and it is for 16 hours per week.
We have registered for Class 2 NI, told tax credits and completed the online registration for the newly self employed. All this was done two weeks ago.
We have heard from the NI people and tax credits but nothing from the registration. Ringing them is hopeless, it is constantly engaged. All we want is some confirmation that the registration has gone through then we will be settled.
Any ideas of how long this takes or how we can resolve it? I don't want a fine
Thanks in advance

Done mine in February, got the NI exempt form 2 weeks later then never heard anything until the self assessment came through in April.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

Easiest thing to do is phone them. Its a long time since I last registered as self employed but cannot remember receiving anything until the self assessment form turned up months later.0

The process is not really "registering" as such. You only do that when you have to register for VAT.
It is really just notifying HMRC when you have a "new taxable activity". From your post it looks like you have done that. It is explained in the following document:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/about/new-penalties/failure-to-notify.pdf
HMRC will eventually send you self assessment forms but it might not be until next year as the self-assessment form will not need to be returned until January 2013 for the work your wife is doing in the 2011-2012 tax year. Good news really as your wife will probably not need to pay tax on her self-employed income until 2013, but the bad news is that she needs to put money away for paying the tax bill when it arrives as it will normally be paid in 6month chunks.0
