Can I cancel this phone call agreement?

Yesterday I called BT to discuss my phone/broadband renewal which is due on 13/10. I wanted to ask about upgrading to unlimited download. It was a bit dearer than I expected but stupidly, I said OK. Thought about it last night & decided it was too dear, Sky would be much cheaper, so I called them back today to say I'd changed my mind.
They said I can't do that now as I agreed to the new contract yesterday & I had till the end of the phone call to change my mind. If it was a new contract, I would be given a cooling off period but it was an annual renewal. I know I've been stupid & honestly, I'm not normally. I usually compare everything before I commit to another 12 months of anything.
Question is, is my verbal agreement on the phone really binding or is there any way out of it?
