  • A long time since I got mine but I think the deal's the same, curry-kits.co.uk provide enough herbs and spices for about 100 servings and some reasonably idiot proof recipes.

My absolute favourite Indian Cookbook is Vegetarian Indian Cooking by Shehzad Husain.Every recipe works and is delicious. If your not a veggie its easy to add meat dishes, but honestly you dont miss meat when the recipes are so good.
I love Indian food, Dhal is the best!

Same here.... I'm veggie but rest of the family are not....The recipes are restaurant quality in our opinion...Once you have all the basic spices etc it becomes so easy - and cheap - to make excellent dishes and, as nooney says, you can always add meat if you wish....A further piece of advice is find where your local Asian supermarkets are...You can save a fortune on buying spices as opposed to buying them in Asda/Tesco etc in tiny jars...Hope that helps!...

  • For those who are after real Indian food I recommend Sanjeev Kapoor's website. He's also published a major book recently but I think the recipes have been adapted so they are not as authentic as the ones you find on the website. Manjula's Kitchen is an excellent website which also includes video instructions.
Madhur Jaffrey is fantastic. One short-cut: go to Asian stores and look for ready powder mixes (masala) for various dishes, e.g chicken biryani or korma. Normally you only have to add frsh garlic, ginger, yogurt/tomatoes, meat and some fresh herbs and you are good to go. They all have instructions in English and cost around 50-60p. They are authentic as they are imported from South Asia. It's a good solution for a quick meal and for people who only cook Indian rarely and don't want to buy all spices. If you decide to buy the spices, go to an Asian store where they are much cheaper than at the supermarket.

I never use books, just go online and source links like this one. You can almost smell and taste he food as they prepare it.

The Curry Secret is my curry book of choice, if you like takeaway/restaurant type curries, but the base sauce is a bit of a faff to make ( I usually make about a gallon and freeze in portions).

The recipe book I use is called The Three Sisters indian cook book the recipes are all family recipes there are no pastes etc just the real thing in fact just made the butter chicken today for our dinner tonight mmmm.
They have a website and you can order from them (I have also seen the book in waterstones too)..you can also get all the spices etc you need from them too there are recipes for lamb, chicken, fish and lots of veg dishes rices etc
friends of ours have had a curry at ours and then gone on to buy the book too.
The recipes are well written and very easy to do ..although you do need to plan as some need marinating over night.
I tend to do big batches and then freeze for another time...
Hope you fine what you`re looking for

I have this, £5 from The Book People, they come to my workplace but you can order online also with postage costs unless you order a few things and reach the free delivery value
