Turning banister into scratching post

Hi!
I've got a couple of house cats and recently they've taken to clawing the top tread on each of my flights of stairs.
There is a banister running along each landing, with a vertical pole at each end, right next to the steps.
Does anyone know where I can buy scratching post material (or similar) to wrap around these posts in order to turn them into scratching posts, in the hope the cats will go for those instead of the steps?
I can find sisal rope, but I don't want to glue it directly onto the pole (rented accommodation). So was after carpet offcuts of something similar?
Thanks

you can get carpet offcuts at carpet stores, usually very inexpensively.:)0 -
Also it is worth going for the corded type of carpet as cats seem to prefer this.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

Mine leave pure wool, but scratch synthetic pretty determinedly. I think they like the static. Or are snobs.:o:D0 -

I did assume this, just didn't know if anyone knew of anywhere online (preferably) as I'm inherently lazy!"We can all fly as high as the dreams we dare to live...........unless we are a chicken" ~ Anon.0 -
Buy some good rope from a hardware store, tie it off around the bottom of the banister & use a couple of cable clips to neaten it up.Then wrap the rope tightly up the bannister then at the top, drill a hole thru the banister wide enough to pass the other end of the rope thru. Then just tie the end off & neaten with a cable clip. Then you can stain the rope to a colour that'll match the banister, but use water based, non latex stain.0
