British Gas Price Hike?

I've just had a letter from British Gas saying that they want to change my Direct Debit from £25 per month to £48 a month  .

We've paid £25 for years, with no change during the winter at all....

While I'm digging out the last bill for a meter reading and cross checking with the meter, has anyone else had a similar letter.. ?

All BG tariffs went up last September(except Click Energy and the fixed/capped price deals)

You don't say if you are talking about gas or electricity. However you must have read that both have risen a huge amount over the years you have paid a £25 DD.

Could it be that you were on the 'Price protection 2007' tariff that has just ended?

It is Gas. An interesting point about the Price Protection, I'll have to check that....

You pay for the gas you use, so by paying a fixed monthly amount your account willl be in credit or deficit, depending on the time of year.
Knowing the way BG work you will most likely up to now have been in credit, they like it that way .
Since the price has gone up so much, to prevent you getting a shock enormous correction bill, they have " adjusted " your monthly payment in their guess of your future useage, and to prevent themselves loosing out,

    'Price protection 2007' doesn't end until March/April.

However if you are not on a price protection tariff then yes, prices have been going up steeply so you would have an impact on your dd, also you have probably built up arrears as prices went up twice last year so are paying that back on top.
