Advice on land investment - where to invest £20,000

Hello all,
I am hoping to get some advice on investment.
Within the next couple of months I might be inheriting around £20,000 and before spending wanted to invest.
I have just opened an ISA with NS&I and put £1000 in it. If I receive the money before April I will invest £2000 here in March and £3000 in April.
This leaves £15,000. I would like to invest about £12,000 in a high interest savings account - any suggestions on this please? ICICI?
And about £3,000 to £4,000 in land. This is where I don't have a clue. Does anyone have any advice on what the best place to buy land for investment purposes is? is it a good investment?
I don't want to invest all my money on this to start off with as would be a bit unsure but might well do in the long term if it proves to be worthwhile.
any help would be appreciated as I've never had this amount of money floating around before.
Thanks,
Joanna

Why on earth do you want to do this? Dont fall for the glossy brochures con artists send out selling plots of land without planning permission. They buy an acre for £4000, divide it into 20 then sell each plot on for £4000 with no particular likelihood that you will ever get planning permission. Its also very illiquid. Unless you want to keep horses id steer well clear. And about £3,000 to £4,000 in land. This is where I don't have a clue. Why do you want to invest in land?
Seems a bit of a contrast, low risk cash savings and high risk land investment, have you considered the alternatives?0 -
"This is where I don't have a clue."
Why do you want to make an invest in something you admit you haven't the slightest idea about? How did you end up with the idea 'LAND' in your head?
If you want to take a punt with three or four thousand, the stock markets present a wide range of options. For the low-risk investor, how about an all-share fund, or perhaps a FTSE 100 or 250 fund? If you want to make things interesting, an Indian stock market fund or a Japanese one.

Thanks for your replies -
The idea of land came from an article I read in a paper - so I did indeed fall for those glossy brochures!
I am definitely not after high risk investment as I want to keep the money safe and in the future use as a deposit for my first flat.
I currently only have a regular savings account and now Isa (which I opened today) so really have never had this amount to consider for investment which is where all these questions come from.
The stock market would indeed be a good option but once again not really an expert.0 -

Thanks all,
The land option was a bad idea - I will not look into it any further (after reading the articles posted)
I will stick to the ISA, High Interest account and possibly invest £1000 in shares, might do it via work.
Hope you all have a good 20070
