Sky Box

I have tried a search but with no luck so I thought I would ask here. I hope it's the right place to do that.

I am on an economy drive at the moment as I'm fed up with high electricity bills. I am turning off video players at the wall etc. when not in use but so far I have been unsure if I can turn off my sky box. I don't know if they update it or something during the night or if it will cause any memory problems.

It's only a straight forward box, not sky plus or anything like that.

I've saved quite a few quid just turning off the video, DVD player, cooker etc. so far.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

  • If you are outside you 12 month contract turn it off at night.

If you really need to update the software there is an easy way to force an update.

Go on switch it off

Tell me more. You have me curious now.

I have had sky for about 6 years now so well outside.

A Sky box does not use much energy in standby so you won’t be saving much by turning it off overnight.

The only downsides to turning it off are that you might miss the occasional overnight software upgrade and it takes a few minutes to sort itself out every time you switch it back on. My Sky+ box takes about two minutes to find all the channels again. Maybe a Sky box is different.

Forced Software Update on Sky+. I think Sky is the same.

    1. Power off the Sky+ STB

    2. Remove the viewing card

    3. Press and hold the Back-up button

    4. Whilst holding the Back-up Button, switch the power to the STB ON

    5. When all four lights appear on the STB, release the Back-up button a message will appear on the screen stating an update is taking place and that it can take 10 minutes (but it can take longer)

    6. When the box goes back to a single red light, leave it at least a full minute.

    7. Insert the Viewing Card, check orientation is correct.

    8. Switch out of Standby using the Sky button on your remote control. The box will switch to channel 998 - the Sky demo channel (it may say “Searching for listings” - don't worry - wait)

9.When that clears, do a Services – 4 – 5 check to see the Operating System Version and/or EPG Software Version numbers have updated (the Model Number may also have changed).

It sounds like a lot of hassle for very little saving. Maybe I will just get hubby to redo the wires and things so that I can turn the other things off that are on the same switch, video and freeview box and leave the sky box on.
Thanks for the help and advice.
