Ebay - return postage costs!!??

Hi all,

Just wondered if you can help me, i brought something from a buisness seller on ebay and it has arrived faulty, they have said i can send it back for a refund.
But who pays return postage??

Usually the buyer pays to return the item although under the DSR this must be made explicit in the T&Cs. I assume you will be refunded both the cost of the item and the delivery charge (from seller to you)? Under the DSR you are entitled to your delivery charge back.

It's worth noting also, that it's up to you how you return the item. The seller can't insist you use their choice of courier and charge you accordingly.

If ebay rule to send it back, its at your expense - I have had to pay return postage quite a few times. Ask the seller to send out a prepayed ticket if they will.

Whether returning under DSRs or SOGA, if the item is faulty the SELLER is responsible for postage.

But if you open an ebay/paypal claim, as said, they will tell you to return the item and issue a full refund -- you will have the fight for the return costs with the seller.

Have you actually asked the seller? Most decent sellers will refund return postage on faulty items.

I have asked the seller and they have said that if i return the item and they find them damaged they will refund postage costs. I'm just worried that when i send them back, they will say their not damaged. I have spoken to ebay and I don't understand why ebay expect the buyer to pay return postage on faulty items!?

In theory this is a fair way of doing it IMO. However, practically it would never ever ever work as too many sellers would simply refuse to refund postage costs dispite it being a legal requirement.


What are ebay supposed to do? They can refund you the FULL price you paid the seller, but they don't have the right to then take additional funds from the seller to pay for postage. They are a sales platform and have a resolution process which rules you can return for a full refund, they are not judges and cannot award you additional costs. Nor should they be able to -- not because you shouldn't be reimbused (I rightly agree they should pay) but because it wouldn't work.


What is the item? Can you photograph the fault or anything? Although even if this was the case you would still have the gruesome task of trying to get the money recovered.
