Hairdresser Complaint - Advice needed pls!

I went to the hairdressers yesterday afternoon to have my hair coloured before going on holiday on Saturday.

I told the hairdresser that I had been using lightening spray on my roots when I booked the appointment and she took a cutting to do a strand test – which apparently came back fine (if she even did it).

My hair was really blonde – almost white blonde. She put highlighting cream and brown dye through sections. When she washed my hair and was combing it I was in tears seeing all my blonde hair come away in the comb. All the bits that she put blonde through at my parting have snapped off about half an inch from my scalp – my hair has obviously been burnt through over-processing.

She blamed the highlighting spray but the bits that she put brown dye through are fine – just the bits that she highlighted (with bleach presumably) have snapped off so I don’t see how she can wholly blame the spray – would the whole lot not snap off if that was the case – would it not just be her over highlighting hair that was light enough?

Anyway, the owner was there (she is not a hairdresser, she said when I was in that someone was going to have to teach her how to wash hair so she must be pretty clueless). She offered 3 sachets of conditioning treatment and an intensive treatment when I get back from holiday in 2 weeks – I’m away to Florida, the sun is not going to help my burnt hair situation – if anything it will make it worse.

The girl that did my hair said that my hair would be fine in a couple of weeks (the hair is GONE it’s not going to be better in a few weeks surely?!)

I left the salon in tears, £50 lighter for the privilege of having my hair (which I was happy with) ruined. I’ve had to change the side of my parting (at my suggestion) to hide the horrible burnt bits.

Any advice on what I should do - should I go back and ask for a refund and a conditioning treatment before I go on holiday?

I'm pretty livid about it all - I must have been in shock that I actually paid for it!

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks

You could phone them up and tell them you're not happy but to be honest would you even want to go back to that salon again?

I wonder if there's any sort of consumer protection organisation that would apply to hairdressing salons.. Apparently ANYONE can open up a salon, they don't need to be registered as a hairdresser or anything. At least that used to be the case, maybe it's changed now.

They featured this on TV the other morning - about anyone being able to set up as a hairdresser with no qualifications at all. It's frightening really!

How about contacting your local Trading Standards?

Try and have a lovely holiday anyway.
  • I would suggest posting on the Consumer board at https://www.salongeek.com
They are helpful, so long as you don't suggest you are going to try and sort it yourself ( or get your mate to sort it).

Wow- I feel like I got off lightly in comparison! (had hair coloured as a hair model for £10, it was only as she rinsed the formula out the hairdresser said "I should have left it in longer..." it all washed out within 2 days. Yes I paid. stupidly!!)

They should not have charged you that £50! I don't know if its possible to get it back? Write to the salon owner? (wont always be the same person as the manager and you may find managers change daily in some salons).

Aphogee is a great and affordable treatment to try, use it every 8 weeks (and no sooner ir it will make hair brittle). Use a weekly moisture treatment inbetween (or in your situation you could maybe try every other day?) Regular trims and tidy ups should have been offered free IMO but then again, I doubt you'd want to go back!
