Car Insurance queries

Im 26 and passed my test last monday - ive only left it this long as my bus cost £11 a week and went every 10 mins. But i have since gone self employed and needed to pass my test.

So i have spent half the night doing research and come across some strange results which kind of show its worth doing some research first.

I have opted for 1.0 ltr cars as anything over is crazy money (£2500 for insurance alone).
So...
A 1.0 ltr Corsa 2005 or earlier, costs around £2000 to insure.
A 1.0 ltr Corsa 2006-2007 costs "just" £1390 to insure.
Most 1.2 ltrs costs £2500 to insure.
Aygo/107/C1 costs about £1300 to insure.

I suppose there is nothing too unusual there but over £600 difference between a 2005 & 2006 corsa in insurance kind of got me. The reason for the difference is LV=.

Every company charges pretty much the same, however LV= wont insure me on a 2005 model but will on a 2006 and then they undercut everyone by around £500-600!

So after the rambling ive concluded that its worth doing some research, to me i would rather pay and extra £500 on a better car and save on the insurance as the car should last me longer that way.

Hopefully this might help some new drivers. Ive literally spent a few hours on ebay, autotrader etc getting a list of cars i wouldnt mind driving, searching for some in my price bracket, writing down the reg numbers and running them through the comparison sites (of which comparethemarket always came out best for me. I also tried gocompare and confused.com).

I then did a list of the car, cost, insurance so that tomorrow i can go and start looking to get a car.

Sorry for rambling, hopefully someone will find it useful.

2006 Corsa = Cheaper to repair, Safer in an accident and better security.

C1 etc cheaper, Have you tried the Nissan Micra or small Kia.

I know Kia doesnt sound trendy but long manufacturers warranty and fairly cheap, Possibly one
of those when my daughter passes.

I cant have a micra, i dont mind what i drive within reason but a micra is just an old womans car :p

I would have been happy with a C1 i didnt look at a Kia though. To be honest, its cost me £2500 (a C1 on lease for 2 years would have been £2400) so even scrap it will work out cheaper over the 2 years when/if i come to sell it.

Im quite impressed with it though. Its easier to drive than what i learnt in (A brand new Corsa)... I honestly dont bomb it, but today i went down a road with the national speed limit and it went with the best of them. The only other car i can compare it to is a Honda Jazz and i think its the best i have driven.

Also, ive never been worried about an exam in my life but my driving test on the day i was bricking. My instructor said theyre not look for a perfect driver, theyre looking for someone that knows what theyre doing. If you mess up it doesnt matter.
Its true. I thought i had failed with 1 stupid mistake, but because the rest of my drive was alright he passed me and only put it as a minor.
It may help your daughter relax during her test :-)

Im sure somewhere corsa means twit wonder if that will get masked out? lol

Micra is an old womans car and a C1 is what?

When your looking at affordable insurance then image is bottom of the list.

Not sure what you mean about £2400 for a lease and sell it after? If you lease the car you dont own it so cannot sell or scrap later.
Unless its some form of purchase plan where you buy it at the end.

If you look past the image, There are some very nice, Sporty or fun cars out there with reasonable insurance.
And it doesnt need to be a 1.0 gutless eurobox.

I didnt get the first comment.

C1's arnt seen as an old womans car. Micra have that reputation from the old micra i think but still.

As for my other comments i think you may have misunderstood what i read.
My Corsa i bought for £2500. I can sell it whenever and will get something back on it.
The C1 will cost me £2400 on a 2 year lease and i wouldnt be able to sell it after.

So i was saying that economically its better to do what i have done, as although the car and insurance will cost me more over the 2 years, i have the fact that i can sell it, and even if i only get a few hundred for it scrap then its still turned out better for me.

  • Just a quick though for any very young drivers - have you seriously thought about a moped instead of a car?

My 16yo daughter's only has a provisional licence (+CBT) but her insurance is just £220 a year - around a tenth of what it would cost her for a year's car insurance at 17. Yes -there are lots of downsides to being on two wheels instead of four (I don't want to open a debate here), but the cost saving is so massive it's worth considering.

  • Yeah my daughters just started lessons, 2002 Ka comes in at £620 as a provisional driver, BUT £5000 after passing
her test, But its only weeks after her 17th.

I tried messing with the settings, Adding me dropped the price by £1200 and dropping to 3rd part fire & theft dropped
another £500. Dropping to 3rd party only put the price up over the fully comp price.

I had a scooter and i wouldnt want my daughter to ride one without some road sense. Too many stupid drivers around.

2 Girls in a Corsa (i think) at the weekend. Wrong lane on the island caused chaos as she went right and cars to her right
wanted to take the exit onto the dual carriageway.
I had the lane to her right, Pulled ahead and moved to the left lane as i wanted the left hand slip further up. As i approached
the slip she was to my right, And started indicating left and did actually start to move into my lane.

If i didnt have to be somewhere i would have pretended to break down whilst blocking the exit. I just floored it and left the
    idiots behind.
