When are punishments going to start fitting the crime

Options
Here in the north east we have had some high profile cases involving death

1. Young 2 year old killed by babysitter ... resulting in her being giving a life sentence

2. UNINSURED driver kills 2 people in car and gets ...7 years ( with good behaviour ) will be out in about 3 years

3. 2 Yobs in a car kill a man by mounting a pavment .... The police CANNOT prosecute as each of these so called members of society BLAMED each other as being behind the wheel of the car

4. Man kills cyclists while over the legal drink drive limit ( cant remember the pathetic sentence he was given )

WHY do people who kill while using cars which are unsafe , uninsured , untaxed or drink drivers seem to get light sentences when they are well AWARE of their actions ... and the DEVASTATION they cause to the victims families.

Quite agree. Maybe this should be on the Discussion board?

I agree as well. In particular those that blame each other to get off - in cases were death is involved they should bring a minimum sentence (e.g. 5 years+) for withholding evidence therefore both of them should serve this. This is getting far to common.

I also think that even for lesser crimes the fines should reflect the costs involved. So, for example, someone breaks into a house and steals a video recorder. In this case any fine should include
    - X hours of police time @ £Y per hour
    - X hours of use of police car @ £Y per hour
    - X hours of custody sergeant @ £Y per hour
    - X meals in local police station @ £Y per meal
    - £X to replace video recorder
    - £X to replace damge to house
    - X hours of householders time @ £Y per hour
    - X hours of judges time @ £Y to hear court case
    - X hours of other court officals time (inc. prosecutor) @ £Y per hour

Add that lot up and that is the base fine plus whatever punishment the judge decides to give. At least then the tax payer would not have to pick up the bill for all these bottom feeders and possibly they may think twice before committing another crime. And before all the bleeding-heart-liberals start shouting about the poor in society not being able to afford the cost ... in the first instance they should have thought about it before they committed the crime and secondly it should be possible to work the fine off by doing community service (working a 40 hour week would do some people a lot of good) - at minimum wage of course.
