I think Noscript will be too much for someone with their first computer

Hmmm yeah, you're probably correct
. 'Why isn't this website working?' Thought I'd put it out there as I haven't seen it mentioned and it's good at what it does.
I think moving to Firefox or Chrome would still be a good idea. Although IE9 is meant to better security wise than previous versions, I find IE so clunky after using those two.0 -

Oh yeah, Noscript definitely is worth a mention in these types of threads. Just didn't want anyone getting overwhelmed and giving up that's all
You're right that IE9 is much better for security compared with previous versions, and it even works with Adblock plus blocklists that have been converted to TPL (http://fanboy.co.nz/ie.html). I'm not a fan of IE either though, been with FF since it was called Phoenix.0 -
Guys,
I use linux on all of my machines so I don't really have Malware/virus problems but years ago, Before I saw the light, I used to use windows and ofcourse I needed Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware & Anti-Spyware programs.
It didn't seem worth the time spent on "Protecting" a windows machine, The Virus/Malware did less damage to the system than that bloated "Security" software. Even as part of a Botnet you would use less bandwidth DDOSing people than all of the updates used every day.
Anyway as the OP mentioned, If you are that worried about going to !!!!!! sites for fear of catching something then don't visit them. But what a horrific thought, Having internet access but not being able to visit !!!!!! sites
Sometimes the price of "Security" is just too high.0 -
I can only think of adding one more thing.
Make sure to get all of your windows updates.
And whatever browser you chose ( I would pick firefox or chrome) then get the latest version and keep it up to date. Any weaknesses discovered will be patched up in newer versions.
One more thing
Who do you bank with ?
A couple of banks offer free antivirus for account holders
HSBC is MCafeee (a bit bloaty)
Barclays offer Kaspersky ( Highly rated by me)0
