Connecting Macbook pro to Philips TV

Options
Hi Everyone

What I thought would be a quick task is now in day three of nothingness please can you help!

I have the following Philips TV: 42pf5520d

I have a Macbook pro circa 2007/208 and I have the Mini Dvi to Dvi adapter.

I also have the dvi - dvi lead connected to the tv and the adapter and the sound lead aswell.

Now I have been told I need to change the input on the TV but for the life of me I can't find how to do this, other websites say it should be a case of plugging in and voila! I'm so confused, can anyone help me get this to work before my hair is all pulled out?

Many Thanks in advance
Nikkei

Taking a quick peek at the manual (Page 16 if you have the same version) it says:

    Choosing PC mode
Press the AV key on the remote control to display the Source List.
Use the Up/Down keys to select PC and then press the cursor > key to switch the TV to PC mode (DVI In).
To return to TV mode, press the AV key, select TV and validate with > key.

You have to change the input feed from the default of the aerial to one of the other inputs be it DVI or SCART. Fingers crossed that it works :D

  • Thanks Chartered Eng i've managed to change the settings over and can now when I connect the laptop the TV is acknowledging the connection, the only problems is it's only picking up the background desktop picture from the laptop nothing else (no icons or opened windows) I'm so out of my depth!!! Any Ideas???? Thanks

There's several ways to use an external monitor/display:

1/ Clone display - the external monitor looks exactly like the laptop's display. Usually not a great idea because the resolution will be the same, mainly used for presentations.

2/ External only - the laptop screen will be dark, and the external monitor will be the only one used.

3/ Extended display - this will be what you are using. One screen will be the Primary/main screen (usually the laptop), and the other will give extra space. Just drag what you want over to the right (or left) and you'll see what I mean.

I've not used a Macbook but I'm sure with a quick google you'll be able to change it as you want it.
  • Fantastic!!! I've googled and I now have picture, I wouldn't have had a clue without the above so thank you so much!!! Now the final part of the problem...the sound I have a stereo jack lead in the headphone port on the laptop and the headphone port of the tv and there is no sound? Have I put this into the wrong place or am I missing something yet again?

Yes in the wrong place :) Those are both 'audio out'. You'll want an 'audio IN' hole on the TV.
