Covered on Courtesy Car?

Our car is in for service and we've got a courtesy car from the dealership. Neither my OH or I thought to check whether I would be insured to drive it, I just tried calling the dealership to ask and they've just closed for the night - I really need to use the car - I'm probably not covered - right?

Thanks

Last time I had a courtesy car from a dealer they took my insurance details and phoned my insurer on my behalf to say they were lending me a courtesy car. Each dealer may be different, but I'd have expected them to clarify the situation with you.

Unless arranged with your insurer beforehand, I'm not sure how it could be on your own insurance unless your policy specifically states that courtesy cars are covered. Some do but it usually applies when your car is in for an accident repair.

The 'driving other car' benefits that most comprehensive policies include specifically exclude anything to do with the motor trade and, in any case, are third party only.

At my dealer, its always on their insurance. If a warranty repair they pay, if a service they charge me a small fee for the insurance for the day
  • My Aviva certificate states:
    The insured vehicle
The vehicle registration mark described above or
    1. any vehicle loaned to the policyholder for a maximum of seven days from a garage, motor engineer or vehicle repairer while the vehicle
registration described above is being either serviced, repaired or having a MOT test.

and I'm pretty sure it provides full cover, not just third party.

But you would have to check your own certificate and policy to be sure.

  • I'm pretty certain you'd covered, as if you weren't then the garage could be committing the offence of allowing their vehicle to be driven uninsured

It's not clear from the OP who is the policyholder on their own vehicle, them or the OH. Does the driving other cars part extend to named drivers on the main policy?

    Not usually.

As Bigdave says, it's highly unlikely a dealer would let you drive away if there wasn't insurance cover to do so.
