    It's good you are posting about your family situation, because this is something you can influence and hopefully improve by going bankrupt.

    Your financial situation is about to be taken out of your control, so there's less point in worrying about that.

    Why bother informing the mortgage and secured loan company of your new address?

    Put bluntly, you are not going to pay them, and they will want to hear about your bankruptcy from official sources anyway, because they won't take your word for it.

    Handing the keys back - or not - is meaningless, they are your keys and you can do what you want with them.

    Now that bankruptcy is a certainty, you may as well sever all contact with creditors, they will hear your 'news' from the official receiver.

    No one goes bankrupt 'at an address', but as you are moving, I think you have a chance to avoid contaminating the new address with creditor contact, which may make you like the new place a little more.

    I don't see it makes much difference if you go bankrupt on the same day, or separately.

    The usual caution is all the joint debts will fall onto the non-bankrupt partner, but this doesn't matter because you are both heading for bankruptcy.

    I can understand your desire to organise the bankruptcies neatly, but you are taking the nuclear option to sort out your finances, so it's never going to be neat.

    Best thing is concentrate on something you can effect, your family, and look forward to the New Year when your finances will be neater, simpler, and straighter than they've been for years.

    Have you contacted the council about council tax exemption for the mortgaged property?

    Maizy - here's the relevant thread with regards to Council Tax, you need the ongoing exemption which may not be offered in the first instance, push for it.

  • I was going to suggest there was no point in Maizy paying the council tax on her old house because, as I learned yesterday, arrears will go into her bankruptcy.

    But then I remembered Maizy is not moving very far, probably within the same local authority area.

    If so, it might be best to keep the council tax account straight on both properties.

    Arrears on the old place would still be part of the bankruptcy, but there must be a chance the council would just add those to Maizy's bill at the new place, whatever the rules say.

    The point is to apply for an exemption of CT on the old property so nothing is due anyway. The thread linked to explains the exemptions and I think Q is the one Maizy needs if I remember the details right.
