Selling on Ebay for the first time (but 100% positive feedback as a buyer)

Hello.

I want to sell a couple of laptops that have been collecting dust in my house on Ebay. I have had my Ebay account for 10 years now but have only ever bought, I've never once sold anything on Ebay. I have 100% feedback (160 items). If, and when, I sell either of the laptops, am I right in thinking the money is pending until the buyer has left positive feedback? As the laptops are both quite high-value items I would be afraid of selling them if this is the case, despite both being new and in working condition (yes, I know, I've never actually used them). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

As soon as the buyer pays by PayPal it's in your account immediately. This isn't dependant on feedback being left first.
It's a good idea to leave the money where it is until you know the buyer has received the laptop and everything is fine.
Remember the eBay Final Value fees in your calculations. (12% of the final price)
Feedback as you know is voluntary and some people never leave any at all.
As a new seller you'd normally have selling limits until you build up your scores and stars,so it's a great idea to start with 2 items.

    Re 'gathering dust'
Be very careful when considering describing your laptops as 'new' when it may be better to say 'unused' .
Also 'new and working' although you've never used them. You cannot guarantee them as 'working'
Perhaps better to state that they are untested by you.
    Best Wishes

I would have some missgivings about the advice above. The money might be there - but you might have no access to it - as i think the 21 days OR when feedback is left rule may well apply if you have not sold before.

    https://www.paypal-marketing.co.uk/safetyadvice/PaymentHoldsForEbayItems.htm

You seem to tick quite a few of the boxes for a payment hold.

If you have never actually used them - then you are assuming they work - just because something is still in the box does mot mean it works.

But i have sold many items that have never been out of the box before -and all have been fine with no comeback. The 21 days/feedback policy is irrellavent really - cos if there is a comeback - ebay/paypal would chase you through the courts and with debt collectors anyway.

So if you are confident with the items then the risk is the same as everyone else - that you are not targetted by a scammer, and that if you are - ebays/paypals seller protection covers you. It will, as long as you describe and post it correctly.

I agree with techspec, as a new seller in a hugh risk category I think it extremely likely that you will subject to the 21 day hold.

There is however no need to be afraid of selling them, you must be accurate though, be honest about them having been stored etc and about any cosmetic damage. Also remember all the usual safety procedures,

Thank you both. That is priceless guidance which I will take under advisement. Thanks again.

One thing: if your money is held, you have to post immediately - you can't wait until funds are released. However, once buyers leave feedback, although it isn't an automatic thing, the money will be released earlier than 21 days after sale.

It's effectively what is called "escrow" - or an involuntary form of it - where the money is held by a third party until the other partner in the transaction is happy with it.

No problem. I've sold quite a few laptops without problem - but still get a bit nervous when doing so. Its natural with the money involved.
  • Shapala,
Sorry about my poor advice earlier, plenty of good advice around though.
I wonder if it's to do with categories as I've never had any restrictions or limitations on my PayPal money, but I'm not selling laptops.
    Good luck with your selling!
