What do you need for Skype?

I thought you needed a laptop with a built in webcam or a desk top & webcam, but reading the internet it seems just a headset?

Or is it more common to have a headset & webcam?

If you want to hear the other person, then speakers. If you want them to hear you, a microphone of some sort.

If you want them to see you, a webcam :)

A headset can be nicer if it's reasonable quality as it'll give an even speaking volume and be clearer. Some laptops come with decent mics, but it's not always the case and can vary wildly. The same with webcams.

    I've got a headset somewhere.

I have Skpe on my laptop and the built in mic and webcam work perfectly and I have no need for a headset.

You could get a dedicated Skype phone but not much point if it works well on your laptop.

I use skype on a desktop with a logitech webcam which has a built in microphone resting on top of the monitor. It plugs into a usb port which then supplies the power. For sound I just use the speakers connected to my desktop.

When setting up, skype has a test facility so that you can check sound levels both ways and you can also adjust the camera picture using the logitech software.
  • I use Skype perfectly on an iPad 2 on wifi.

  • Poundland sell headsets; perfectly good quality for Skype. Just make sure with cheap headsets that you don't pull them too far apart as they are liable to snap.
