Top tip - start looking on the Coupons Board https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3494051

I've been a MSE member for ages now and just started using coupons this last month or so and have saved £1's, many, many £1's.
Must have almost a years stock of non-food items now (mostly cleaning items) and some food items (free soup, cereal, Flora etc.)

  • Thanks Lynsey

Richard, I think organic is healthier for my baby and me (im breastfeeding).. when I started weaning I read a few books and although they don't say you must feed organic to feed them well they do swing the balance to the favour of organic food. Less pesticide, nasties..etc
    My partner is skeptical though..

Do you eat or drink anything that isn't organic then?

    They're 10 for £3 I don't why the silly list isn't showing that!!
My green grocers charges the same or more for fruits and vegs

I'd say downgrade from Organic then. If you truly need to save, it's one thing that would save you a bit of money.

My local greengrocers is so cheap, I get 2.5kg of Maris Piper for £1.29, compared to Mr T's £1.79.

Ahh good on the offer for the Mullers :) Was gonna say 10% of your budget on yoghurts

The only other thing we do is buy whatever brand is on offer (depending on the offer obviously) if there are no brands on offer, we buy Supermarket own brand.

You do seem to have a lot of yoghurts. Have you considered making your own using something like easiyo ?

I live in london and water is so disgusting.. it tastes awful! lots of limescale on the tap as well..yuck!

    Granted, but;

    1 Highland Spring Still Water 6 X 1.5 Ltrs £3.09

That's 34p a litre. Tesco do an Ashbeck own brand and a Perthshire one as well which is more like 20p a litre - that's a quid you can knock off the bill.

Looks like you have to make a lifestyle choice between the organics (or at least some of them) and your housing situation. I would perhaps be looking to do some research on the individual items and seeing what difference being organic really makes in terms of what you are taking in. Organic mushrooms for example seem like one with limited benefits - they are a fungus that grows on rotting "stuff" and water - how does being organic change that? Similarly organic prawns? Do they have their own little bit of pesticide free sea to swim in?

Thinking about the health implications of what you eat is good, but its easy to get suckered into the marketing ploys. It also seems a bit pointless to go to all that extreme and then bulk your diet out with bog standard processed bread full of air and preservatives.

The other thing I would suggest is try running this list on mysupermarket and seeing what comparitives it brings up - it does try to match own brands and I tend to find Asda around 10% cheaper (they have a 10% guarantee at present) although I suspect they have a more limited organic range.

  • Are you actually using all this food up in one week??

Perhaps they're farmed in spring water with added organic salt.

We buy Aldi's Free Range Chicken 1.5 kilos (that more often than not weigh in at 1.7 kilos) at £4.99 each and they are delicious. We also buy their fruit and vegetables.

Also try Lidl - I prefer their cottage cheese to anything that Tesco or Sainsbury's sell. I bought a bag of potatoes 7.5 kilos for £2.65 last week and they are lovely.

I am always rather dubious about organic. How can you be sure anything is truly organic. Can you be sure that the supposed organic veg is not grown next to a field that is 'treated'. Perhaps it is just me, as I am a bit of a disbeliever.

If you buy veg that is in season you will also save lots.
