Loading web pages - 'taking over'

I'm not sure if I have clicked a setting somewhere by accident.
Not sure how to describe this - if I start a web page loading - then open a new/other tab to carry on doing something else while the 1st loads. When the 1st one has loaded - it pops up as being the 'current' page.
It's very annoying as the loaded page seems to take priority over what I'm doing.
Can I change a setting so that 'I' decide which page to be working on rather than the laptop taking over??

Which browser? If it is FF or Opera, it is a setting something along the lines of 'open new tabs in background' or 'when I open a link in a new tab switch to it immediately'. If I understand what you're describing, that is ;-)0

But we need to know which browser you are using. This is the program you use to access web pages.I'm using XP.
It is probably Internet Explorer, but could be Firefox or Opera. If you can't see the name, can you click on "Help" somewhere near the top of the screen which will say "About Internet Explorer" or "About Firefox" etc."The trouble with quotations on the Internet is that you never know whether they are genuine" - Charles Dickens0 -
Sorry - its Internet Explorer 7.0

Try options | general | tabs | settings | Always switch to new tabs when they are created - and untick the box :-)
That's what it would be on IE9, anyway :-)0
