Hi!

After A LOT of deliberating I've narrowed it down to TWO full HD televisions. I wondered if you king terchnical people could advise on my choices? Max budget is £300-we sit in a not too light sitting room-10-15 foot from tv. Hoping for 2 scarts (not the be all & end all)-& watch normal tv (no sports) & sometimes action films. Not bothered about any slight scratches etc...

Before I take the plunge any other websites/comparison sites (happy to have graded/refurbs) i can look at?

Choice 1)- http://www.electrical-deals.co.uk/toshiba-regza-40rv753b-40-full-hd-lcd-freeview-hd-tv.html -I know it's refurb...but particularly impressed by 2 scarts, 4 hdmi & the 'upscaling' of normal dvd/tv signals. Plus freeview HD (area I'm in at mo has crap reception-so we're on Virgin Media with TIVO box)-great if i move. Also warehouse is only a 40 min drive from me so no postage.

Choice 2)-(In stock at my local ARGOS)...http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5295487/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CHome+entertainment+and+sat+nav%7C14419512/c_2/2%7C14419512%7CTelevisions%7C14419667.htm ....mainly cos price is SO good!

Choice 3 (is 100hz REALLY gonna make a difference) http://www.cheap-lcd-tv.co.uk/32_LG_32LH5000_XD_Engine_Full_HD_1080p_Digital_Freeview_LCD_TV_592_d

Any advice on my choices?

  • I would 10,000% recommend that you go and see the sets in action before buying them! LED/ LCD TVs (both are actually the same technology just the back lighting changes) can both suffer badly from motion smearing, irregular lighting, grey "blacks" and poor off angle viewing.

Without seeing them with your own eyes your not going to know if these sets work for you or not... ideally look at them in a darkened room as things like black levels are easily hidden on the shop floor with bright spot lights.
  • Hi insideinsurance....I don't think you can view at these places-but all have a 'no-quibble' 7 day returns policy.

The first one is the only one with Freeview HD - if you want to receive BBC/ITV/CH4 HD transmissions the other two won't do so unless you buy an extra box or go with Sky / Virgin or, of course, play BluRay discs from a separate player.

The advice to try and see one before buying is sound. Also - have you Googled these sets and looked for any reviews from existing users?
  • 32inch is too small IMO especially at the 15-20 distance your sitting. So I would go for the 40inch.

Here is a review from a good source.

    Overall a good review.

I also agree with the advice of checking items out in person. It's what I always do. That's the only purpose I find Currys/PCWorld Comet etc useful for. :)
  • Hi David39....yes I have checked the reviews out. The Samsung in particular gets good feedback. As far as the HD freeview goes for the forseeable future (2-3yrs) think we'll be staying with Virgin so the freeview hd is not that important. Unfortunately the places which have them as refurbs don't allow you to view them 1st (at least I don't think they do)-but you can change within 7 days.

I find that 100hz really does make a difference. I've got 2 lounges in my house both with HD tele's (they're both sony)
One is 50hz and the newer one is 100hz and wow what a difference it makes to the picture. It's really good for watching fast action pictures like sports or films, it's a lot crisper.
    Hope that helps
  • Thanks millionaire! Will ask them if i can view it before I buy...if not may still purchase as I am in driving distance from them.

    whats your reason for scarts?

Virgin should provide you with a free VHD box to be able to get HD channels for free and would use an HDMI port.

100hz does make a difference, its a much smoother picture.

I would make serious consideration for buying from Amazon, excellent returns and service offered - and usually lots of deals available from the Warehouse section
  • Hi visidigi/mj132...scarts are for my dvd player & my bang up to date ps2 (!). Will look at the 100hz but feel it may be a bit over my budget-ulness I look at a 32 inch?
