Can anybody help me please. The missus wants to go to Florence but I do not seem to be able to find direct flights. Preferable airports are Birmingham, Manchester, Coventry, East Midlands altho at a push I would go Luton or Heathrow but prefer not to.
Many thanks in advance

The only direct flights I could find last year was from Gatwick with Meridiana airways. Flights were good - Most people fly direct to Pisa and catch a bus/coach/train to Florence0

Yep thats the way to do it and also stop outside florence as the hotels are much cheaper, lots of public transport in and out of florence.
Thomsonfly go to pisa from CovThe best work is the cheapest as the quality remains long after the price is forgotten0 -
the only company that flys into florence is air italia - the rest go to pisa which is just over 1 hr by train from there, the train station right next to the airport. Train and coach from airport cost about the same - you buy tickets in terminal building to your right as you come through arrivals also at other end by check ins, train very comfortable and efficient.
Warning en route back eat before you go throught to departure lounge as only cheese and ham sandwiches available in very small bar there whereas lots more before you go through.
Ryan air fly from standsted to pisa
I went to florence in november and cannot recommend the city for anything other than a day trip, it is very dirty with pedlars trying to sell you things every 10 yards or so, if you do go watch out for the muggers and street robbers - I was almost a victim but fortunately for me I felt something and turned to see some teenaged boy had undone my bag and was trying to take my.purse..............over my dead body sonny............Police do not seem that bothered about either the pedlars or attempted robberies, traffic very heavy and people generally miserable.
The food is cheap for the most and decent coffee every where - Ulfrezzi gallery very good but churchs ok not a patch on Rome. Pisa on the other hand is very clean and far more welcoming to tourists though you can also do that in less than a day - there is good value left luggage place at end of platform one so you can spend day day then catch train back to airport which is only 5 mins from pisa central.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
Flew Thompson air from Coventry to Pisa. okay for the money ( beats RYAN DON'T CARE any day !!!!)]although Coventry airport was basic to say the least . when we arrived our flight was delayed so we were told to wait in the car park till we saw it land .... i kid you not . they have a bar/ pub there now though i think so don,t worry. Flight with Thompson was fine and good value too.
cannot say the same about Florence.
Dirty , Crowded , beggar ridden , traffic choked , overpriced , sticky heated , crime infested toilet of a city . nice works of art sure , but i would rather go moss side for a daytrip than go back to Florence.
stay in or around Pisa if i was you hire a car and away you go it,s about a hour and a bit to Florence from Pisa. be sure to read this link before you hire any car in europe http://travel.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,18409-2166250_1,00.html
if you do go though ....Book the Ufizzi and other attractions in advance. call the booking line (they speak english) and book a time and date when you wish to go to each. you can then pick up your tickets from any ticket office in the city and go straight to the front of the queue at whatever attraction you wish to see, as long as you are within your time window which is a couple of hours i think. i cannot remember if it,s free or has a very small charge but You would be MAD not to do this as the queue for the Ufizzi is a couple of hours at least if you just show up.
BUT if you can check out Sienna which is a plesant nice place to vist.. it,s the city Florence should be IMO, and is free of all the problems i listed with Florence. sit in the Main Square in a cafe order a coffee and / or a meal and wait for a guy in a red beret to show up . entertainment of the highest amusment
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:0 -

I have found that too - it is a tip and honestly best avoided - do rome - or pisa instead.

Ryanair fly to Pisa from Liverpool and have a coach service to Florence which works very well. Hotels can be quite expensive but if you search a few sites you should find something reasonable. Stay as centrally as possible so that the major sites are within walking distance. You can visit other places by train from Florence and you can also take a bus from Pisa airport to the Piazza dei Miracoli. Ignore people who say Florence is not worth visiting - it's absolutely stunning!0

Uffizi gallery - This is a must but BOOK online well in advance (as sooon as you know when you are flying) for tickets and queue for 10 minutes instead of 6 hours - I do not jest this is the biggest tip I could give to anyone going to Florence.
I have never known 2 places less alike than Florence and Moss Side so ignore the above comments.
Fly to Pisa and catch the train - very cheap (about £5), very easy (ticket salesman understands English, not too many platforms to get lost on, times available online) and takes about 1 hour.
Your wife will love it. Remember to book the gallery tickets in advance she will be well impressed.[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]
