To the outsiders it seems a sh1 tty area to be in so you can see why there will be a shortage further down the line ..
Just one of the many grey areas in the construction industry.
I dont even know if its legal to give a sole trader subby a contract for X amount of work but the firms are doing this not to secure a tradesman for a certain length of time but to have an excuse to make a cards in lad redundant.
Ten times easier to knock a subbys wage right down and pile the work on than with a cards in lad.0 -
Not worked along side the cards in lads for a while but when I did there was always an us and them thing, nothing harsh just banter really. Seems like the companies are the culprits now stirring the sh 1 t.
Never had a contract and probably never would have signed one anyway.I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0 -
Another gripe in recent years was the amount of work through agencies, steered clear, they kept rates down and whilst we were out on site in all weathers the spotty faced toe rags in the office were creaming off the workers to pay their wages. Working on a job in Gloucester and a bloke walked on and took over the recruitment etc, I walked off. Jokers. If subying I prefer to be paid by a bloke who is either on the tools or has been in the past, not some t1t who knows jack sh 1 t about the game.I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0

Ive definitely experienced the us and them thing with a couple of cards in lads, they dont like it when we turn up on site and do 2,3,4 times more work than them because it makes them look bad.
We dont set the prices though so i dont know what they expect us to do. Most of them are usually up for the pi55taking but theres always one on every site who fcuks it up for everyone else.
Lots of brand new subbys turning up nowadays who have been made redundant from a cards in job, its a big shock to the system for some of them but thats the way things are going so a lot more lads are going to have to get used to the idea of grafting like a mad man to make it pay.
I have been offered a contract now and again but i could never sign one as its way out of line in my book and will just make a bad industry worse.0 -

I absolutely despise the agencies but what i find worse in our neck of the woods is we have got a few who cant handle being on the tools because they are pretty much useless at their trade, they generally end up playing golf with the main men and then suddenly become a labour supplier.
It will be quite amusing this year when a labour supplier comes out to site asking for this weeks invoices as last year one of them on a site i had left got a fair old kicking for not paying a lad for 3 weeks and refusing to answer his phone over the matter.
Its now nearly 12 months later so everybody is even more pi55ed off so i dont think Labour suppliers should go anywhere near the lads on site when its minus 8 or 9:rotfl:0 -
I seem to have stumbled across a thread written by people ostensibly speaking English but in a dialect I've never heard before. I can only surmise that either:
1. You're all using jargon
2. This is an Orkney Islands (or similar - Manx?) based conversation
Anyone care to translate. !!!!!! does toolbox mean in this context for example?
Toolbox talks are an insurance. You have been told how you go about it, you have signed it. You have now signed agreeing with their policy.
Basically covering their ar5es.0 -

Maybe you should come and work for a decent Sub-Contractor who looks after his men! It is a shame what is happened to you. However, it sounds a bit like sour grapes to me. If you were to work for a Sub-contractor who does things right then you would not have all these problems. Best you get off site work by the looks of things. You sound really bitter to me. A wee job elsewhere will do you the world of good and help you release all your bitterness. Us parasites will keep the Construction Industry going whether you are there or not and will live in our huge houses and 4 x 4 cars and cream everything from the workers.
I have to say so sad that you think this way. You are just a small minded, bitter person.
Anyway I am away to get my tool box register sorted for tomorrow morning!
.
Why? Well there's really only 1 reason.
There's not work out there like there used to be. Lowest price wins. I don't mind that, work harder and cut corners is the general attitude. I will say though the standard of work on all the sites I have worked on is terrible.
I would love to reel of some of the work I have seen!0 -

Nails and screws are slowly becoming a thing of the past on site nowadays, expanding foam, silicone and gripfill are holding a lot of new builds together.
Oh and not forgetting the first class mortar that will surely stand the test of time:rotfl:
The building game has come full circle as far as i can see, in days gone by it was the foremans job to make sure the work was done correctly and to a high standard, now the foreman says fcuk it just stick it with gripfill its handover tomorrow:rotfl:0 -
