Reclaiming Other Charges

I've started this process with Barclays. I requested details on two accounts. On one account (now closed) there were no undue charges but a standing order I consider to be erroneous. When Barclays closed this account (that's another story) all benefactors of Standing orders wrote to me saying 'ere where's our money and so I set up alternative arrangements. This (erroneous) one did not.
I wrote to Barclays at the time and got a load of codswallop, they said there was no paperwork as I had set up this standing order in the branch which I don't recall ever doing nor would I do such a thing. At tat time due to all their other hassle I gave up.
Now with more scrutiny and 6 years of statements I see this comes to roughly £1.5K. I wrote to Barclays on December 4 2006 asking about this standing order. They have not replied.
What I am contemplating doing now is using the same process as reclaiming charges. i.e. if they are unwilling/unable to furnish details or prove the validity of this standing order then I deem it to be erroneous and claim back the money using the courts if necessary.
It this a valid strategy? anyone any comments/opinions
Incidentally the standing order was to something called "Debt Enforcement" - I've no idea who this is but I think the receiver of the payments could actually be Barclays themselves
