Car tax increase
Options
Hoping someone can help here ive just had my tax renewal in and its jumped up to £190 and im not really sure as to why exactly, ive had a look on dvla and the aa and both state that its down to omissions but how do i find out if they have got it right? and that im in the right band? Ive got a 52 plate 1.8 petrol mondeo and they have set the omissions to 186 which is £190 would this be right for my car? Ive looked on the mot certificate and there is no mention of omissions on it so i cant back up what they are saying and the engine size is 1799cc so im not really understanding where they get 186.
Can anyone explain to me at all or do i just have to accept it?

Because your car was first registered after 1 March 2001, the level of car tax is set not on engine size but on emissions. The emissions for taxation purposes are calculated by reference to the car's "book" fuel economy in grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre, not with reference to your car's actual performance.
MoT emissions measure the proportion of unburnt fuel emitted from the car's exhaust, not its CO2 emissions over a kilometre and therefore the MoT is nothing to do with the level of taxation.
Therefore, assuming that your car does (in theory) emit 186g/km of CO2 it just scrapes into Band F, which is £190.00 for 12 months (the same as for an older car with a 1.8 engine, by the way). If it emitted 185g/km or less (a new Mondeo 1.8 LX apparently emits 184g/km - so check) it would be in Band E and therefore would only cost £150.00 per year. However the actual performance of your car is irrelevant - it can't be tested easiliy and so it simply falls to the manufacturer's specification to calculate the level.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
Debt now: £14,100
Debt free day: October 2008 :beer:0 -

Thank you, just checked my registration document and it says 187 which what ive been billed for, even though it is a new shape 1.8lx, so i need to fork out £190.The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
By "new" I mean 2006 or 2007 model year, as opposed to the 2002/2003 MY car that you would have.
My car is pre-2001 but I think the emissions are shown on the V5 registration document for newer cars.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
