Wonder if you guys can help.
Are bulk buy items cheaper in Makro than buying on the high St? everytime I've been in, things like catfood, washing powder and even cofffe have worked out more expensive.

hi..... i went yesturday.... after being a member for years...
and to be honest......i find the supermarkets a lot cheaper...i went there with pen and paper.... and calculater to work out the exact indivdual price... with vat etc... and a lot of items dont even come close..
i was in the pet food section... and asked the guy a question... and said to him... that supermarkets were much cheaper... and he said.. but they do loss leaders....
ok thats true.... but on practically everything
not being rude to the peeps that were there yesturday... but i feel peeps think just beause it is supposildy a cash and carry.. it is goibg to be cheaper.... and its not..... even the catering size packs ( sugar as an eg ) worked out over a £1. a kg
i used to go to batleys when we had the business.... and they had much better prices.....
i would suggest if you go again... take pen paper and calculater and work out the prices on the things you would buy..... and then compare..... as the indivdual price mark on the labels are excluding vat i know some food items dont have vat ... but its suprising how many do
e.g toilet roll in bulk £7.99 + vat it worked out at approx 30p a roll.... at the mo.. tescos have nouvelle on offer 9 pack for £1.84 and thats 20p a roll....Work to live= not live to work0 -
Thanks, thought it was just me as my maths aint too good!0

My parents used Makro about 30 yrs ago, and even then you had to know your prices before you could be sure you were getting things cheaper than on the high street.
I went recently because I was catering for a large barbeque - so assumed ( wrongly as it turned out ) that Makro would turn out cheaper for bulk purchases. They didn't have everything I needed, so ended up at Asda to buy the 'missing' items - and they were WAY cheaper on all the items I had just bought at Makro !! - Plastic cutlery, napkins, bread rolls, coleslaw, burgers, etc...
If I ever decide to use Makro again I will certainly gen up on all the supermarket prices for the things I need.
Also, When I have been tempted to go specially because of one of their special offers - advertised on the Makro Mail - 99% of the time they havn't got that item in stock, and don't know when it will be in. I have even gone to the trouble to phoning up before hand to check if they have the item in stock - been assured they have, made a special journey only to find they have sold out last week, and haven't had any deliveries since !!!:mad:0 -
Yeah i've noticed that too. My husband rang them up and they refuse to reserve any item for you. I've been when I've seen electricals and homeware in the Makro Mail, got there and they dont have it.0

The makro we go to is about a minute from asda so when we go, we go to both! 9 Times Out Of 10 Asda works out a fair bit cheaper, but i do like makro because it has basically everything!0

It varies - if you sign up to MakroMail and only buy the stuff on special offer, it usually works out cheaper. Many times, so does their own-brand stuff. Otherwise, it's usually cheaper in the supermarkets, and don't forget the VAT where applicable.0

to be honest.... i think the best way for saving money on groceries etc.... is bulk buy when their on offer in the supermarkets......non-perishables.... tins... and stuff you can freeze.....
i also found there wernt very good at matching the sel with the product..... so you really had to look for the price of things...
i think the only thing that i will buy there are the bulk pack of 50 chinese style cartons platic with lids..... ideal for when i get my new fridgefreezer .....for bulk cooking and freezingWork to live= not live to work0 -
we shop in makro only when they have good offers though and never buy anything really unless it is on offer
nearly always get my washing powder, fabric softner etc from there a huge box lasts for ages when bought cheap works out even betterIf you want the rainbow you have to go through the rain.

i only buy in bulk when its in the makro mail leaflet
at xmas we got vouchers in local paper for various things like BOGOF on toilet rolls, even a free tin of quality street with no minimum spend
Also ours has been refurbished so there are lots of deals insideIf You See Someone Without A Smile......Give Them One Of Yours0 -
I find them expensive for groceries (eg large Clover marg £3.40 something, supermarkets usual price £2.38), but sometime they have BOGOFs . You MUST know your prices. Having said that, I like their meat, very good quality. Had a leg of lamb on boxing day (we slow cooked it), I think it was £3.98 kg which is very cheap for lamb and it was amazing.
Like previous poster says, look in your makro mail and see if there are any offers that suit you, only get them and get the rest from the supermarket. HTH0
