Car Insurance comparisons

Just felt the need to have a vent.

Today our car insurance was up for renewal, so I have spent the past few weeks and days getting the best possible quote. We have recently changed our car, so we were expecting it to be higher, but when our renewal came in, we were shocked to say the least, £1400!!!

So I hit the comparison websites and got the figure down to around the £630 mark (around £700 because we want to pay monthly). This is for fully comp, with 10 years no claims. 1 speeding SP30 this year (for him) and one claim over 3 years ago (not on our insurance).

I didn't choose the cheapest yearly quote because it wasn't the cheapest overall. I opted for a quote from Santander and duly rang the number given on the comparison website. Whilst on the phone, I was made aware that they did not need to add the claim, as it was a motorcycle claim (which is what our last insurers did also), but I feel it better to be honest with the insurers, because some do add it. She asked if me or my husband were students, we are part time students, both evenings. She told me this would add a premium to the policy because of the additional miles. I countered that we had already given the estimated miles for the year, but she would not be told. She then gave me the new quote which was over £900 for the monthly figure (the original being £720). I asked her how they could have possibly arrived at this figure, as the claim had been removed, and she said it was because we were part-time students!!!

I decided not to go with them.

I then rang Hastings direct, who worked out at £727 originally, similar conversation, quote went up to £835, they said its because I did not make them aware of the claim (I did) and because they make certain assumptions about us.

In fact, the only quote that stayed the same was with esure, which is for £730 for the year and is the one we have taken up.

It makes me soooo mad that when you use the comparison websites, and indeed the insurers own websites, they change their minds once they have you on the phone and add massive amounts to the cost.

Rant over :D

  • One question would be why are you transferring to the phones? The basis idea of Quote & Buy systems is that you buy using them.

Aggregators will always have their limits because they are trying to meet the needs of 100+ companies without having to ask 1000+ questions. It is always sensible to go back through online all of the questions/ answers and ensure all the assumptions are correct before buying.
