Cheapest way from North to South?

Hi all,

I'm living now in Aberdeenshire, North-East Scotland but came originally from West Sussex, Southern England. As I still have family there, both they and I would like to visit each other more frequently but are finding it very expensive.

As British Airways seem to be the only company doing flights from Aberdeen, there' s no choice and therefore prices remain high - we could go abroad for less!

Does anyone have any ideas about making travel cheaper? This could be through multi stop flights or by some other method of travel.

the cheapest but not most comfortable option is megabus
prices vary but from aberdeen to london is around £30 return then london to worthing is about £5 return.

only problem is it takes about 15 hours total but the aberdeen to london u can get a ngith bus adn sleep on it.

    always an option i think!
love you lots like jelly tots :o
  • Hi

Just a thought, could you fly to Edinburgh using one of the lo cost airlines or get a bargain deal on one of the main carriers and then bus/train to Aberdeen.

you can get National Express coach Aberdeen/London from £2 return with their "fun fares"....but its about a 12 hour journey each way...
  • For cheapest, hitchhiking with one of the mant HGV's that operate out of Aberdeen.

Hi - have you tried BMI Aberdeen to Heathrow and return?

Midweek prices from around £70.00 return including taxes.

    Also Easyjet to/from Luton.

Take the Caledonian Express sleeper train from Euston to Aberdeen, then it doesn't matter how long it takes as you are sleeping all the way. It certainly beats trying to sleep in a coach or having to get up at some ungodly hour to get an early flight

But your claim that British Airways seem to be the only company doing flights from Aberdeen is wrong - BMI/BMIbaby also fly from there to Heathrow.

And don't dismiss BA especially if you book well in advance - their cheapest Aberdeen to Gatwick tickets are £44 each way and you have to try very hard to get the price over £50 each way

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I didn' t make it clear in my original post but as I' m going to West Sussex, I always fly to Gatwick. I' ve found that although I can get cheaper flights into Heathrow, Luton and Stanstead, when you add the train fares to get into Sussex on top, it works out more than the direct flight.

The coach ideas are good for me but wouldn' t be suitable for my Dad when coming up here as he' s 81 and would find the long journey difficult.

I guess what would be ideal is if anyone knew of a flight from Aberdeen ending up in Gatwick with a stop to change in between?
