Advice needed - possessions and benefits - please read!

This might be a little complicated but I hope you will be able to understand.

My ex boyfriend and I seperated (we were an unmarried couple) just over 8 months ago, and I moved out from the place we had rented together (housing benefit) back to my mothers.

We were both on a joint income support claim in my name (because I am sick and he was supposed to be caring for me) and the money was going into my bank account (not a joint account).

At the time I was in a fragile state of mind, and because we had a lot of possessions which were bought over the period of the two years we had lived together, I came away with a lot less because he tried to blackmail me. He was being quite threatening and nasty, and my main concern was to get the hell out.

As it happened, over the last however many months I've been coming to a realisation as my head has become clearer (he emotionally damaged me and it took me a long time to get over it, also considering he spread some rather nasty rumours and gave me a lot of hell for a long time), that he got away with holding onto a desktop PC of mine that I had bought long before I had even met him years and years before, and recently I contacted him asking him to return said item to me.

He refused, and my current partner got involved, trying to reason with him politely, and to which my ex got quite nasty and threatening and now wants to take me to court over if I want it back.

I don't really want to go this far, however I know I'm entitled to it, but also it's more the fact he's threatening to give out the password to the computer to his family so they can use my account and have access to all my personal information, stuff that has sentimental value.

Other than this, my question really comes down to (in relevance to the topic) what am I entitled to for possessions bought whilst together if the money was coming to me, the items were bought by me with my bank account? When I left the relationship he got pretty much everything we had, (a netbook I had bought for college, furniture, games, dvds, books, old phones of mine (a smartphone included), as well as the computer I mentioned and I just got a small HD Tv and my PS3.

The netbook's insurance is still in my name, but I don't know whether I can claim to it because he has pretty much stolen it claiming it was bought with "both of our money".

In terms of the possessions being bought from my account does this mean I would have ownership of the items we bought?

I'm not really too bothered in going through all the bother of court tbh as I'm pregnant too now and any stress just is not good for me, plus it would be a lot to deal with. but I was curious of my rights?

Anything you can tell me would be great :) thank you.

  • this is a benefits and tax credits thread your posting in the wrong place
  • Where do you suggest I post this? I didn't know whether it was in the right place, but it was related to benefits so I figured it might well be.

If anyone could point me in the right direction?
  • Were all these items bought out of the benefit money you received while you were together?

  • A couple were mine from before we got together but mostly yes. The claim was in my name and the money was from my bank account.
