British Gas don't charge a standing charge, even on pp meters. The gas rates are the same as quarterly payers, electricity have different rates but it's not always more expensive, it depends on your region.
Remember the prices went up in September, if you hadn't had the meter reset since then you would notice a difference when the new meter was fitted. If you had tried to stop them fitting it then they would have simply reset your old meter so you would be paying the same.0 -

The meters still have the standing charge programed into them as gritish bass do not own the meter. BG offset the tarriff in order for the customer to save around the same as paying no standing charge.
its a big problem at the minute 1000's of people are still on rates set 5 years ago now all the new meter operators are changing to key people are seeing massive increases in their usage.0 -
yeah.... usually ppl haven't had their meters changed for so many years. Especially the token meters that are on the old tariffs. They should be thankful that they haven't had their meters updated for so long and getting cheaper electricity....0

Brtish Gas decided in their wisdom to fit us one of these. Nearest shop to top it up - over a mile away. Me think not. Rang Npower up. They were more than happy to supply us and remove the meter. British Gas then tried to tell me that because they hadn't updated the tarrif, I owed them about £70. Again, me think not. Argued my case that it isn't my problem that their incomptence means I apparently owe them money. A quick call to energywatch and all was sorted. This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0

see you from kerry....
Electricity has gone up a lot recently, avarages around 10p a unit depending on where you live, even on a normal meter.
So unless you are happy saving up to pay bills, then you should worry more about the quantity you are using and try to cut that down.
At 6p ish per Kwhr you were getting it on the cheap, hence the company changing the meter because they were selling it to you at a "loss".
At least with Ebico there are no standing charges real or hidden(like BG's  )ac's lovechild0 -

Lat night we had 46p left in the meter plus the £5.00 emergancy. I reput the key in to activate the emergancy thinking i would have £5.46 left in the meter only for it to completely take up my 46p leaving me with only the £5.00 emergancy.
The idea of the emergancy is to help you in an emergancy when you are low of money not to take money of you. Absolute rubbish.
.........................................................
yes now this is something I was wondering about, I had 81p left along with the £5 emergency so i put in the key thinking I would give me 5.81, but like you it took my 81p.....the cheek of it.....then to add insult to injury I went out and had my key loaded with £20 credit, by the time i got home i'd used 33p the 5.00 of the emergency so i thought ok when I put in my 20 it should read 19.67 but no it reads as 18.87, so for using 33p of my emergancy I have been charged 1.23............so why has my meter swallowed 2.04 of my credit.
some one please tell.............I have no debt from previous meter as i was in credit b4 they changed me to key.0 -

On the contrary British Gas charge 14%+ more for prepayment gas meters operated with a card without any debt to recover. It's in their tarrifs on their website, only they don't tell you about the 14%+ you have to calculate it from the figures given.0 -
i would definantly talk to you suppliers re the tarrif you are on. i currently have a british gas key meter changed from a card meter within a month of me moving in. there are 2 of us living in a 3 bed house - my brother works shifts so is often in consuming electricity while i am at work (office hrs). we generally top up the meter every 4 weeks with 20 pounds (we need to keep an eye on it towards the end of the 4 week period- just in case we have used more!) before the prices went up we used to get a couple more days out of it.
i find i save with the prepayment meter as we are more careful with saving energy (lights, standby etc) if it means it could run out!!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0
