New England in the Fall. Too late?

I've always wanted to do this trip and have booked a flight to Boston on Oct 18th. Stay there for 2 days then on to Vermont for 5 days and back south to Cape Cod for 5 days. I'm now beginning to think we'll be too late in the season to see the trees at their best. Has anyone been at this time?
Also, any suggestions on places to visit?

I went to New England 1st Oct to 18th a few years ago, to be honest, until the later parts of the holiday the foliage hadn't turned properly, however, since the weather plays such a large part in when the foliage turns, every year is a bit different.
http://www.weather.com/maps/activity/fallfoliage/index_large.html is a useful resource for showing the foliage...
Places I liked.. Salem (near Boston) pretty cheesy to be honest, but fun in the run up to halloween. Beer from this place http://www.smuttynose.com/ The free Ben and Jerry factory tour (but there isn't much else near there).0 -
We're planning a road trip from New York to Boston next year during October - I had thought that anytime from late September onwards would see some great fall scenery. I can't wait!
I hope your dates work out well for you.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

You won't be too late. We had a road trip a few years ago in late October and the scenery was great. The build up to Halloween is worth seeing too, as they really get into it.0

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
