Advice about a faulty Laptop

Options
Hi there I need some advice as my laptop that I bought from Currys on 17/04/2010 has recently started making a bell like noise(like a cat scratching its collar) coming from the fan with smoke and ash/dust coming from it!
I was wondering about my rights as a consumer as its 17 months old and the warrenty has ended!
It hasnt packed up yet but I am extremly worried that it will, soon, and even if it doesnt it shouldnt be doing this!! Any help will be appreciated! Thanks

  • Hrrmmm, Could be anything from a clogged fan to a capacitor blowing to everything in-between.

More Info such as Make, Model, Price paid would help.
  • Firstly if you are getting dust from the fan area, your fan may have failed and will soon kill your laptop, my advise would be not to check. As you have bought the laptop you are entitled to have it repaired as mine has lasted me over 3 years.

goto the tech guys and it should be done for free.

If not come back to us.

Everything you said is wrong after the fan part.

Easy way to check a fan failure is to turn it on its side and turn it on, if the fan starts then its not a failed fan.

Now aside from the Techy side If we assume it is faulty and not your kids playing a prank you want to follow the SoGA.
    1. Its over 6 months so the onus is on you to prove it is inherently faulty.
    2. Don't take it into the store they can't and won't be able to do anything.
    3. Phone 0844 561 1234 option 3 then option 3 again for the dedicated OOW Foc (Out Of Warantry, Free Of Charge) line who will take details and cross reference against purchase and if it falls within criteria they will issue a repair or partial refund.
    4. if it doesn't they will inform you they can pick it up for a repair in which they will take a upfront payment of £50 to inspect it and if it is inherently faulty they will fix it and refund the payment, if it is not a manufacturing fault they can phone will the cost to repair or you can have it back unprepared (but the £50 is forfeit).
    5. You can arrange your own independent report and if faulty knowhow will arrange a repair/partial refund and refund the independent report
