Hi, i came accross a gumtree ad today; someones selling a vauxhall corsa 1.0 3dr 2005 for £1300 which imo is really cheap even though it has bumps on it and stuff.

But in the advert it does state it doesnt have a logbook. Is having one an importan tdecision in buying a car - even if the HPI checks came up clean
NEW OWNER WILL NEED TO APPLY FOR A V5/LOGBOOK AS I HAVE LOST IT!

he also says he doesnt have the service history but its on the vosa history, is that ok?

Run as fast as you can.

Too cheap for year - check!
    No service history - check!
No logbook (the big one!) - check!

:rotfl: "at you will not find another 2005 corsa with mileage as low as this trust me"

Really? There's one in my mum's garage....

Avoid at all costs. The car is a Cat C write off but the looks of it, which is why he doesn't have the V5.

If he'd just lost it he could apply for a new one.

The service history won't be on the VOSA website, just the MOT history which isn't the same thing at all. The MOT doesn't change the oil or put in new filters.

The DVLA lists the car as Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) Marker VIC required A Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) marker has been set against this vehicle record.

Don't you need the V5 to actually transfer ownership of the car?
  • Cant believe you even had to ask...

The simple answer is NO YOU DON'T. You can transfer ownership without a V5. A V5 is not proof of ownership and it even says this in big red letters in the middle of the front cover. A V5 merely shows the registered keeper.

The new owner applies for one saying the old owner didn't give them one. A letter is sent to the keeper registered on the DVLA system to inform them of a change and if there is no response, it all goes through just fine.

No, but the other ways are much more hassle and take several weeks.

But without the V5 you can't easily check that the car is registered to the person who is selling it, you can't see whether there are any other anomilies (such as the cat c), etc.

I might consider buying without a v5 where I could be absolutely sure I was gaining good title (ie. from an auction). But otherwise, run away. Especially as this is combined with so many other scam alerts - gumtree, low price, no documents, seller who confuses MOT with servicing, VIC required.
