Best time of year to buy brand new car + can you haggle on low value new cars?

Following on from my previous thread, I was looking to buy a nearly new small car with the criteria being as new as possible (for remainder of warranty) and as low emissions as possible - budget was 5k.

I'm now being tempted by the new shape Picanto as I figured that if I sell in the future it's likely to retain it's value better being the latest model? From what I can gather the new shape model has only been out for a few months so not much scope for buying a nearly new.

Is there a best time of year to buy brand new, I know the new registrations come out in March & September so I'm guessing car dealers do OK in those months. As an example is it best to wait til October so they have a new months target to beat or does it not make much difference?

With the Kia Picanto being a relatively cheap new car (£7800ish) is it possible to haggle still and get a discount or do they tend to be set prices due to being relatively low value?

Have never bought a brand new car before so apologies if these are stupid questions!

I doubt you'll get much off a new Picanto at all at the moment.

Outgoing model Rio on the other hand......

Drive the deal is quoting a £157 discount. So discounts are around, but not huge. I'd try a few other brokers.

Make sure the warranty is transferrable. The 7 year warranty on Kias is NOT transferrable so if you buy one used at a year old, it doesn't have 6 years left, it has none.

Hammyman please stop spreading this entirely incorrect rumour

The 7 year warranty on a new Kia automatically transfers to the next owner just like any other new car warranty
  • Thanks, I've been googling and can't find it much cheaper than 7.8k. I didn't know if car dealers were able to knock money off during face-to face deals.

    The Kia website says different:
    6. Can I transfer the warranty to the next owner when I sell my car?
Yes - the Kia 7 year warranty is fully transferable to any subsequent owner of the vehicle while still valid.

The only further discount you might get is a PCP finance deposit contribution if you take Kia Finance - you could pay the finance off in the first 14 days...... ;)

Thanks, in that case it might be worth me seeing if my current car passes it's MOT (and not bother paying out for the service and any non-essential work) and keeping it til the end of the year.

Have you discounted the Fiat Panda spookylukey?

I liked it when I test drove one, cracking little thing and they're cheap.

Yes, it may be cheap but it's incredibly ugly! :D I'm not really that fussed on looks and would have happily gone for a C1/107/i10/Aygo/Alto/Picanto/Pixo at the right price but the Panda is a step too far!
